Beneficial Announcements for Feb 2017
1. Yemeni Businesses Close Shop to Protest Trump Travel Ban
NEW YORK— Hundreds of ethnic Yemeni business owners who operate New York City corner bodegas and neighborhood delis closed shop Thursday in protest of President Donald Trump’s travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries. The shops were locked at noon and were to remain shuttered until 8 p.m., according to organizers of a late afternoon rally in downtown Brooklyn. At least 1,000 Yemeni-run small businesses are a part of many New Yorkers’ daily lives. Trump’s executive order barred people from Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Syria from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Under the order, travelers have been detained, sent back from the United States or stranded in other countries. As night fell, a raucous but orderly crowd of at least 1,000 people including many of the shopkeepers filled a plaza in Brooklyn to protest the travel ban. Many waved the flag of Yemen. Their cheers echoed between tall buildings to the federal courthouse a few blocks away where lawyers for the government and civil liberties groups appeared earlier before a judge hearing a legal challenge to Trump’s travel restrictions. Zamood Zokari, left, and Ali Elazab, right, post a sign on a window of Zokari’ family deli in lower Manhattan, alerting customers that the store will close because of a protest against President Donald Trump’s travel ban, Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, in New York. Yemeni business owners who operate corner bodegas and neighborhood delis shut them down on Thursday in protest of the travel ban on people hailing from seven Muslim-majority countries including Yemen.

2. Petition Against Muslim Travel Ban by Trump Administration
Please sign the petition to The United States House of Representatives and The United States Senate which says: “Targeting people based on their religion is wrong and unconstitutional. Shutting the doors on some of the most vulnerable people in the world—refugees seeking safety—shows a moral bankruptcy that is shocking even for Donald Trump. We demand that you go on record and resoundingly reject Trump’s Muslim ban.”

Amidst the darkness of Arabia, the injustice and persecution, one man blossomed against all odds. In it we learn of faith and resilience through times of transformation and uncertainty. In it is the blueprint to living as religious minorities in a wider society. Shaikh Kamal El Mekki will be teaching us about the Meccan seerah in a way that you’ve never experienced it before. Ahlan Wasahlan Jan 2017

Beneficial Announcements for Jan 2017
1. What Would A Muslim Say?” New Book by Ahmed Rashed

There is a lot of despair today. The current political climate has people from all faiths and backgrounds worried and afraid. After a vicious Islamophobic campaign in which Donald Trump said he’d “absolutely” require Muslims in America to register in a database, one of his top advisors on homeland security, Kris Kobach, may be trying to implement this registry once again. We cannot allow this to happen! We MUST act! This book can make a difference! This book can replace fear with understanding! For the past 10 years, I have helped facilitate dialogue with many different people, answering questions and addressing misconceptions about Islam. Many of these conversations were deep and engaging dialogues, and I felt these eye-opening interactions should be made public. This book was written to share these conversations with people who might not otherwise have the ability or opportunity to talk with a Muslim. Here is the link: What Would a Muslim Say | LaunchGood

2. First Islamic Cemetery in Massachusetts
After a long and hard fought legal battle, and with the help of the United States Justice Department as well as Attorney General of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, an agreement has been reached with the Town of Dudley to purchase and establish the first Islamic Cemetery in the State of Massachusetts. The total lot is 52 acres in size, of which 6 acres will be initially developed in order to house several thousand burial spots, insha Allah. After 10 years, we will have the right to expand beyond the 6 acres. See article –  http://www.wbur.org/news/2016/12/23/dudley-muslim-cemetery-approval. Now, we need to raise $350,000, to complete the purchase of the land.  Please contribute for this worthy cause. Our Tax exempt FID number is 20-1363186. Please donate by visiting our website and click DONATE: http://isgw.us/donate or mail your checks to: ISGW, 57 Laurel Street, Worcester, MA 01605. Questions? Beneficial Announcements for Nov 2016
Your Voice Counts, Vote on Tuesday (Nov 8, 2016)
70 Imams from 30 cities have got together to urge Muslims in the US to go out and vote. It was necessary because some people in our community have been circulating information promoting cynicism about voting and political engagement. In our society, standing up for what is right entails speaking out about issues, working with other citizens, voting, and making sure that politicians stick to their promises. Anyone refusing to participate in this process is essentially denying a most important path to establishing justice in our nation. We must strive for peace and justice at home and abroad. When we take part in the electoral process, we make our voices heard. Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Election Day.

“Lost Islamic History – Weekend Intensive”
Aug - Lost Islamic History

Taught by Mufti Hussain Kamani, including special sessions with Lost Islamic History author Firas Alkhateeb. Conquests and Dynasties. The Golden Age and the Decline. War and Politics. Science and Scholarship. The history of Islam is rich and long and fraught with moments of glory and moments of ignominy. Too often we think our history stops at the Seerah of our beloved Rasulullah (saw). But immediately following his demise we had his illustrious successors. With Abu Bakr (ra) we had the establishment of our principles, with Omar (ra) we expanded our empire to the far reaches of the land, with Uthman (ra) we established our government, with Ali (ra) we learned how to deal with conflict amongst our own, with Muawiya (ra) we grasped the context in which our religion developed, and then so on and so forth until Islam in the world today. Our scholarship is not devoid from our politics, and our present is not divorced from our past. The discord of today is a remnant of the struggle our spiritual forefathers experienced – and they survived them. Let’s humanize our heroes and take lesson from our legends as we finally listen to history repeating itself. Tickets $99. Organized by ISBCC in partnership with Qalam Institute.

“Enemy of the Reich: The Noor Inayat Khan Story” May Reich
Noor Inayat Khan was the daughter of a spiritual teacher from India, Hazrat Inayat Khan, and his American wife, Ora Ray Baker. After Noor’s birth in Moscow in 1914, the family moved first to England and then to Paris, where she was raised. In 1940, the Nazis invaded France and twenty-five year old Noor fled with her family to England. There she joined Britain’s Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and trained as a wireless operator. In early 1943, she began her assignment as a covert agent, joining Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive (SOE). The SOE worked with the French resistance fighters to sabotage industry and railroads in preparation for the D-Day invasions, after which they would co-ordinate attacks on the German army behind enemy lines, tying down troops and diverting the Germans from the invading Allied troops. From Paris, Noor Inayat Khan secretly transmitted critical information back to Britain. In the next four months she was often the only link between the U.K. and the French Resistance. She was pursued by the Gestapo and finally betrayed by French collaborators. The Nazis arrested her and imprisoned her in Paris, where she fought back against her captors and escaped twice. Finally, she was sent to the infamous Dachau concentration camp in Germany where she was executed shortly before the end of WWII. There are thousands of films about WW II but the Muslim story is largely missing. Our aim is to share a story about a hero who was unique in her own right: growing up in a household with American and Indian roots.
