Beneficial Announcements for June 2015.
1. Ramadan in About 2 Weeks
According the local moonsighting methodology, the month of Shaban started on Wed, May 20, 2015. The night of Nisfu Sha’ban (The 15th night of Sha’ban) fell on Tuesday night, June 2nd, 2015. The 29th of Sha’ban will be on Wed, June 17, 2015. Muslims will be looking for the hilal of Ramadan with their naked eye on the night of June 17 and reporting their findings to hilal committes such as Central Hilal Committee of North America and Hilal Sighting Committee of North America. An announcement will be made by these hilal committees later in the night of June 17 to confirm if Ramadan starts on June 18 or 19. For more info on the beginning of Ramadan, contact www.hilalcommittee.org or www.hilalsighting.org
2. This Ramadan, Choose Occupation-Free Dates
During Ramadan, many Muslims break their fast following the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with water and dates. Unfortunately, a large portion of the world’s dates come from farms inside Israeli settlements that have been built on stolen Palestinian land. In fact, Israel is the largest exporter of the Medjool variety of dates. These dates are grown mainly in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea areas of Palestine on land this is now under occupation. When we buy dates from Hadiklaim, Mehadrin, or the brands Jordan River, Jordan River Bio-Tops or King Solomon dates, we are supporting the occupation, the settlement industry and the oppression of the Palestinian people. Now, in it’s 4th year, AMP continues to ask people to buy American and to purchase dates that have been produced in California or Arizona. 3. Muslim Woman Beats Abercrombie & Fitch
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Samantha Elauf, an American Muslim woman who wears a hijab and was denied a job at Abercrombie & Fitch when she was 17. Clauf claimed the company did not offer her a job because her religious identity violates Abercrombie’s “look policy.” During oral arguments, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out that the case is unlike most employment discrimination cases in that the hiring manager at Abercrombie has openly admitted lowering Elauf’s score upon learning from another manager that the hijab violated company policy. The court ruled 8-to-1 in favor of Elauf.
